Pandelis Diamantides - World Building Through Generative Processes (Generative Processes Unplugged: Conceptualising Non-linear Narratives w/ Paper and Pencil Workshop), PROTOTYPE Conference 2023, Cyprus University of Technology, Limassol
World Building Through Generative Processes
This keynote will delve into the application of generative processes in crafting an artistic language that retains the aesthetics of the artist while continually surprising both the audience and the creator with ever-evolving material across various modalities. Join us on a journey through the intersection of art, technology, and creativity, where generative processes unlock new possibilities for profound artistic expression and exploration.
Generative art is a captivating form of creative expression that leverages algorithms and procedural systems to produce visually or aurally compelling compositions. At its core, generative art embraces algorithmic creativity, with randomness, procedural generation, and emergent complexity as key features. Artists code the rules and parameters that govern the artwork, often blurring the distinction between code and artistic medium. Whether interactive or static, generative art explores the beauty that arises from the interactions within algorithmic systems, resulting in intricate and often unpredictable outcomes. This art form extends beyond the visual realm, encompassing generative music, sound art, and animation, experimenting with data-driven approaches or incorporating real-world datasets. Generative art serves as a canvas for aesthetic exploration, pushing the boundaries of traditional artistic norms and inviting audiences to appreciate the unique intersection of technology and creativity blurring the lines between creator and creation, challenging traditional notions of authorship.
Generative Processes Unplugged: Conceptualising Non-linear Narratives w/ Paper and Pencil
This hands-on session, an extension of the lecture, "World Building Through Generative Processes," will empower participants to conceptualise and design generative processes for non-linear narratives using just paper and pencil away from the computer screen. Designed for a select group of 8 - 12 participants, this workshop bridges theory and practice, encouraging attendees to explore the practical application of generative processes. Departing from conventional linear storytelling, participants will engage in the art of crafting narratives that evolve dynamically, offering both creators and audiences an immersive and unpredictable experience. With a focus on manual, hands-on techniques, participants will learn to design generative processes that breathe life into narratives, fostering a deep understanding of the intersection between storytelling and computational creativity.
